The Spot

Overview

Whether they realize it or not, teens are constantly in an environment that pushes them to use alcohol and other drugs at young ages. From cartoon characters selling alcohol in TV commercials to celebrities endorsing the legalization of marijuana, teens are bombarded with messages that scream, "Substance use is OK." And, in today's culture, there are more places than ever for those messages to pop up.

Teen hang outs run the gamut from cell phones to the Internet to coffee houses - all of which are designed for chatting, playing games or just hanging together. MADD's multimedia show, The Spot, encourages teens to take a hard look at the people they hang out with and the messages they are getting. Whether they spend time at a bowling alley, a friend's house, a coffee shop, online or text messaging, The Spot shows teens that it is up to each of us to make sure our "spot" is safe and free of harmful elements.

Key Message Points

  • Students shouldn't buy into the hype that they have to drink alcohol or use other drugs to fit in at The Spots in their town.
  • Limit distractions while driving by paying attention, limiting the number of friends in their car, limiting night driving, staying focused and buckling up.
  • Find friends who accept you for who you are and not for what you do.
  • Party sober, party safe!
